기억의 틈에 숨겨진 숨

2012년도에 제작한 <봉인된 시간-감성적수평선>은 영상작품이다. 작가가 직접 해변에서 이젤을 설치하고 바다를 향해 풍경을 그리기 시작한다. 그러나 그리는 풍경은 바다가 아니라 자신의 기억에 자리 잡고 있는 평온한 풍경이다. 수평선 저 너머 실제 존재할 것 같은 자신만의 미지의 세계를 보고 그리는 이 영상은 시간이 지나면 지날수록 불안해진다. 왜냐하면 자꾸 밀려오는 밀물에 의해 작가의 발이 바닷물에 잠기기 때문이다. 그런데도 작가는 아랑곳하지 않고 태연하게 자신의 풍경을 그려나간다. 그리고 이내 발목까지 물에 잠기게 되는데 수평선과 물에 잠긴 발목의 라인이 수평으로 일치되면서 저 멀리 보이는 수평선이 마치 발목으로 옮겨 놓은 것처럼 느껴진다. 저 멀리 수평선 너머 미지의 세계가 반복적으로 파도치면서 자신에게 다가온 밀물은 프랙탈 프랙탈 : 인간의 지문이나 해안선의 모양, 숲에 나뭇가지가 뻗어있는 모양들처럼 세부 구조들이 끊임없이 전체 구조를 되풀이하는 ‘자기유사성’을 갖는 구조. 명확하고 질서정연한 구조가 아니기 때문에 복잡해 보이지만 나름의 규칙성을 가진 구조이다. 

과 같은 시간의 반복성과 자기유사성을 갖는 규칙성과도 연관이 있어 보인다. 작가가 연출한 이 퍼포먼스는 앞서 본 다른 오브제, 회화, 사진 작품들처럼 같은 접근방식의 맥락으로 읽혀지는데 마지막에 작가가 떠난 자리에 남겨진 풍경작품을 보고 있으면 그동안 불편한 현실 속에서 살면서 복잡하게 자리 잡고 있는 기억의 편린들을 ‘손질된 일상, 상실된 기억’의 형식으로 찾으려고 했던 경계가 캔버스의 사각 라인으로 옮겨지며 자신의 기억으로 되돌아간다.           

이인희는 자신의 작품으로 세상을 파고들기 위해 자신의 기억과 자신이 현재 살고 있는 현실 사이의 중간지점, 즉 기억과 현실의 경계에서 파생되는 수많은 틈 속에서 ‘숨’이라는 자신만의 표현 언어로 세상을 파고든다. 자신이 그동안 살아오면서 축척된 기억들의 끝자락에 비밀스럽게 숨겨진 숨은 현실세상과 다양한 방식으로 연결되어있다. 또한 그 사이에 존재하는 무수히 많은 관계들은 항상 고정되어 있는 것이 아니다. 왜냐하면 이 세상 또한 하루하루 전 세계에서 벌어지는 수많은 사건들이 끝없이 뒤엉키고 반응하며 반복하고 있기 때문이다. 또한 사람의 기억도 필요에 의해 스스로 편집되고 각색된다. 그동안 살면서 뇌에 기록된 기억들은 서로 반응하기를 반복하며 시간을 뛰어넘어 재구성된다고 한다. 그것은 기억이 스스로 존재하지 못하기 때문인데, 가령 자신의 옛날 사진을 오랜만에 볼 때 느껴지는 이상한 기분은 자신의 뇌에 각색된 기억과 다르다는 것을 순간적으로 알아차리고 혼란스럽기 때문이라고 한다. 기억의 존재방식은 멈춰 있는 것이 아니라 계속 움직이고 반응하며 변해야지만 존재할 수 있다는 것이다.  

이인희의 작품에서 보이는 모든 대상들은 의미 없이 존재하는 것은 없다. 이 대상들이 원래의 의미를 찾는다는 것은 이미 과거라는 시간 속에 존재하는 것이기 때문에 현재에서 되돌아간다고 해도 완전히 되돌아 갈 수 없지만 작가의 안식처에서 계속 봉인되면서 모두 상처가 치유되기를 기대하며 그 세상이 영원이 펼쳐나가길 기대해 본다.

A Breath Hidden in the Margins of a Memory Delving into the World

Sealed Time: A Sensitive Horizon, created in 2012, is a video piece. The artist brings an easel to the beach and begins painting a landscape while facing the sea. However, the landscape the artist paints is not of the ocean, but scenery from her memories. This video of the artist painting her own unknown world, which feels like it would exist beyond the horizon, grows increasingly uncertain as time passes. It is because the artist's feet become submerged under the seawater as the tide rises. The artist nonetheless calmly continues painting her landscape. Soon Lee is up to her ankles in the water, and as the horizon horizontally coincides with the water level at Lee's ankles, it feels like the horizon far away is moved to the artist's ankles. The rising tide, which approached Lee as an unknown world beyond the horizon far away repeatedly forming waves, appears related to a regularity possessing a repetitiveness of time and self-affinity as in fractals. Fractal : A structure of self-affinity, like the forms of human fingerprints, coastlines and the shapes of outstretched tree branches in forests, in which the finer structures ceaselessly repeat the overall structure. These are structures that appear complicated because they lack clarity and order, but they actually possess certain rules.

This performance, produced by the artist herself, can be read in the context of the same approach as in Lee's found object, painting and photography works we have discussed earlier. 

To delve into the world through her works, Lee In-hee investigates the world through her own expressive language of breaths within innumerable interstices derived from the midpoint between her memories and reality from the artist's life, i.e., the boundary between recollections and reality. Breaths, which have been secretively hidden at the edges of Lee's accumulated life memories, are variously connected to the real world. Also, the innumerable relationships in between them are not always fixed. It is because in this world, too, innumerable events occurring around the world on a daily basis are endlessly reacting to one another and repeating themselves. Also, human memory edits and embellishes itself as needed. It is said the recollections recorded in our brains repeat reacting to one another and are reconstructed transcending time. This is because memory fails to stand alone, and, for instance, the uncanny feeling one has when viewing an old photograph of his or herself for the first time in a while is due to a realization that what he or she sees differs from the recollection inscribed in his or her brain, and the confusion that stems from it. Memory exists not by standing still, but by continuously moving, reacting and changing.    

No visible object in Lee In-hee's works exists without meaning. For these objects to find their original significances would be premised on incompleteness because those significances now reside in the past. However, I anticipate all of their healing while they continue to be sealed in Lee's haven and anticipate this world will unfold forever.

[작가노트]

기억은 불완전하고 인간은 그러한 기억의 결집체이다. 또한 인간은 끊임없이 기억과 새로운 관계 맺기를 시도하며 때론 현재의 나를 절단하고 봉합하며 치유하고자 하는 의지를 갖기도 한다. 

쓸모없어져버린 사물들을 매만지며 상념에 젖고 그것으로부터 길어 올린 관념의 꾸러미는 새로운 가치로 전이되고 대지 위에서 재생산된다. 이러한 일련의 행위들은 일상으로부터 격리되어 환원되고 치유되는 양상을 보이지만 그들이 뿌리내린 대지는 결국 인간의 삶이고 나의 일상이라는 것, 행복을 표상하듯 평화로운 초원은 아름답지만 그 풀숲 안에서 일어나는 수많은 현상들을 우리는 모두 알지 못한다. 단지 나는 가끔씩 방문하는 이방인의 손을 빌려 봉인된 시간의 빗장을 풀고 그 안을 손질한 후 잠시 닫아 둘 뿐이다. 진실은 항상 현상 너머에 있지만 우리는 현상 안에서 살아가고 그 안에서 가끔 진실을 기웃거리며 봉인되었던 계절을 맞이하곤 한다. Memories are incomplete, and human beings are a regiment of such memories. Also, people ceaselessly attempt recollecting and forming new relationships, and a person has the will to sometimes heal their present self by cutting and suturing.

The idea bundle drawn from thoughts had while holding objects that have lost their utility is transferred to new values to become reproduced on the great earth. This series of actions demonstrates the appearance of being restored and healed through being quarantined from the everyday, but we are unaware that the great earth they planted roots in is ultimately human life and one's own daily life, nor do we know all of the innumerable phenomena occurring within the dense grass of a beautiful and peaceful grassland, seemingly a symbol of happiness. It is just that I borrow the hands of a foreigner who occasionally visits to unlock sealed time, touch up its insides and temporarily close it in. The truth always resides beyond phenomena, but we live within phenomena and sometimes peer into the truth from our places, welcoming a season that had been sealed. (The artist's note)
